“Everyone is welcome!” – a well-intentioned statement by many art and cultural institutions, but a lack of accessibility often prevents people from visiting. In order to make art accessible to everyone and to break down barriers once and for all, we need an open exchange with people with disabilities – with experts for their own cause. Would you like to know how you can contribute to a barrier-free museum experience? In the Interactive Inclusion tutorial course, experts from the field of inclusion and the arts talk about the diversity of needs and possible measures to enable a well-rounded museum visit for all people. After all, “we aren’t disabled, but barriers impede us”, emphasizes one of the experts, Michael Gerr.

A museum that is accessible to all: what does this mean? What does accessibility look like in this area? In order to offer everyone the opportunity to explore and experience art and exhibitions, fundamental education, an open dialogue with existing and potential audiences, and a barrier-free access are important.

For this tutorial, ten experts from the field of inclusion and culture talk about their professional and personal experiences in nine videos and give suggestions on necessary and desirable measures for greater accessibility in museums. They identify fields of action and explain, using concrete examples, how an enjoyable visit to a museum can be made possible for everyone – from planning to the actual visit itself.
